The Fairyfolk of the Fells

Since moving to the North East 3 years ago, I have been

fascinated by the rich history of the area and the folklore that

goes with it. There are several tales I’ve read of the spritely,

mischievous Fairyfolk of the Fells, who protect the moors and

ensure that the locals don’t take themselves too seriously. I

wanted to capture some of their energy in this piece,

combining a folky melody with some more crunchy, dissonant

harmonies.

Hartlepool Dance No.5

The idea for this piece came when I was playing Brahms’

Hungarian Dance No. 5. I took inspiration from this amazing

piece but wanted to make it my own. Hartlepool Dance No. 5

is an uplifting comedy take on Brahms’ Hungarian Dance,

simplified to Grade 1 standard. Double stops are one of my

favourite flourishes on the viola (as well as harmonics, triple

stops etc!) so I wanted to use them to make a strong ending to

this piece. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed

writing it! Hugo Ward (age 11, Grade 5 viola).

in popularity of the Sea Shanty, made famous on YouTube by

viral songs such as The Wellerman! I am originally from

South Tyneside and raised in Northumberland. I now perform

and teach violin and viola across the North East and this piece

reflects my connection to the area as well as my desire toinspire and engage young viola players with accessible and

culturally relevant music.

This short march is in the style of Joseph Haydn and I have

tried to capture some of his sense of humour. It is in D major,

but it asks the violist to play C naturals and G sharps,

suggesting that the tonality is mobile, but in quite a subtle

way. While it is a march, there is an opportunity to flex the

tempo slightly at the end of the middle section. It is a quiet

and understated piece, but with a swell in dynamics in the

middle. The music ends quietly with some fun pizzicato.
